10 COMMANDMENTS WRITTEN WITH GOD’S OWN FINGER: REMEMBER THE SABBATH

The ten commandments (which we are told God wrote with “His own finger” in Exodus 31:18) for all of us to work six days and rest on the seventh day. We are to do this based on God’s example of creation. God Himself is again drawing a clear distinction that the intention of His Word are literal days for Creation week. Of course God did not say work six million years (or undefined eons or “gaps” of time) and rest for a million years…

God said: “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work…For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11) Emphasis mine. 

In Exodus 20:8 God is stating in this commandment for us to remember the seventh day and by doing so we keep it holy.  Holy means ‘set apart’,  therefore, we are to ‘set apart’ this seventh day as to remember when God completed creation.  In Exodus 20:9 God claims this Sabbath day (the seventh day) as belonging to Him.  As a merciful loving God He desires us to also set this day apart and keep it holy by following the same model in our life.  This is very important to God as it pertains to His creation work and our remembrance of this event.  The precision of the biblical text articulates God’s intention for us to work six days and rest on the seventh day: just as He did during creation.  It is crystal clear that God sees His creation as occurring in six literal days and resting on a the seventh literal day.
