DNA MOLECULE consists of coding and non-coding regions. Protein-coding regions comprise a small percentage of the genome (less than 2%), while non-coding regions include regulatory elements and sequences comprise the 98%+ (with varying levels of known function to date but this knowledge is expanding daily). A portion of the genome is known to be functional, though the exact percentage is still under investigation but studies currently find up to 80% functionality. Presumably the entire DNA strand will prove one day to be 100% functional. Any old and debunked ideas of “junk-DNA” have been eradicated by modern research.
