Chaperones

« Back to Glossary Index

CHAPERONES are specialized proteins that assist in the proper folding, assembly, and stabilization of other proteins. They help prevent misfolding and aggregation but chaperones do not alter genetic sequences. Chaperones (like Hsp70, Hsp60 systems) will bind to the misfolded proteins to prevent aggregation, use ATP to try to refold it into the correct shape, or mark the protein for destruction. This makes macroevolution very difficult (if not impossible) to occur because every biological mechanism is working to prevent protein modification.
