ALLELES are alternative versions of a gene that a parent provides in their germline to offspring. These variants can influence traits (such as eye color). Each individual typically inherits two alleles for a given gene, one from each parent. Alleles may be dominant, recessive, or show more complex patterns of inheritance. They are also referred to as “allelic” forms.
