Evolution

« Back to Glossary Index

A modern-day theory used to define everything from the emergence of the universe at the Big Bang to genetics to simple change. Here, evolution means the variability of populations as driven by the mechanism of spontaneous mutations (genetic errors), which become locked into offspring by natural selection (hereditary DNA).  Interchangeable terms include Darwinism, Neo-Darwinism (neo meaning “new”), common ancestry, descent with modification, and many others.
